Washington University Procedure

A sponsoring department must notify OISS when a J-1 scholar completes his/her program by completing the appointment in HRMS.

Transfers

If a J-1 scholar is currently working at Washington University and would like to transfer to another institution, he/she must contact OISS before leaving the university. The scholar will need to provide OISS with the name of the new institution, and the phone number and email address of the advisor who oversees the J-1 program. OISS will contact the new J-1 program sponsor to arrange the transfer in the Student & Exchange Visitors Information System (SEVIS).

A J-1 scholar must transfer before the end date on the DS-2019.

30-Day Grace Period

A J-1 scholar must depart the U.S. within 30 days of the DS-2019 expiration date or the program end date, whichever is earlier.

During the 30-day grace period, a scholar is not allowed to work or carry out J-1 activities. Travel and re-entry to the U.S., even to Canada or Mexico, is not allowed during this 30-day grace period.

The 30-day grace period is only for J-1 exchange visitors who have completed the J-1 program, and not for those who have been terminated in SEVIS (i.e. for not maintaining status). If you are uncertain if a scholar qualifies for the grace period, please speak to an advisor at OISS
